Ayurveda


Ayurveda is made up of two Sanskrit words "Ayu" and "Veda". "Ayu" means Life and "Veda" means Knowledge so Ayurveda means "Knowledge of life". It is also translated as the "Science of Longevity". It is the oldest and most holistic healing system available. Its origin days back to 5000yrs in India and was placed in written form over 2000yrs ago. Before the advent of writing it was transformed orally for many generations. Sage Vyaasa put the complete wisdom of Ayurveda in to writing. 
Ayurveda believes that human body is the direct replica of the universe. It is the miniature of nature. The 5 building blocks of nature called elements are Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth. Space is the first and most basic of all elements. All these elements are represented in the Human being as three life forces or humors or energies called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These three humors govern all physiological and psychological process in the living beings. 

 Around 1500bc Ayurveda was divided in to 8 branches of medicine.

* Internal medicine
* Pediatrics
* Psychiatry
* ENT
* Surgery
* Toxicology
* Rejuvenation 
* Aphrodisiac (treatment of impotency and sterility)

Vata has space (rymd) and air (luft) element.

Pitta has fire (eld) and water (vatten)

Kapha has water (vatten) and earth (jord)

WHAT IS VATA 


It is a Sanskrit word, which means that which moves things. Vata is responsible for all movements in the mind and body, movement of air in and out of lungs, Flow of blood through circulatory system, nutrients through alimentary tract, and thoughts through mind. Vata promotes a healthy balance between thoughts and emotions and give rise to creativity, activity and clear comprehension. It mainly regulates the nervous system. In its normal state it bestows with enthusiasm, regulates all activities of body, mind and speech, proper functioning of sense organs and initiates and executes the urges of urine and feces.

Vata when imbalanced produces emaciation, black discoloration, desire for hot things, tremors, distension of abdomen, constipation, loss of strength, sleep and loss of sensory functions, irrelevant speech and giddiness, Generalized aches, Weight loss, constipation, flatulence, hiccups, burping, dry or chapped lips, dry mouth, dry eyes, cracking joints, stiffness, rigidity, etc



WHAT IS PITTA


Pitta carries the meaning of that which digests. It is regarded as the fire within the body. Body temperature is due to Pitta. All digestive and metabolic functions in the body are due to Pitta. It maintains the body temperature, vision, production of hunger, thirst, appetite, good complexion, intelligence, skin luster, and provides color to the blood. It also governs our ability to digest ideas and impressions and therefore perceive the nature of reality. It stimulates the intellect and creates determination.

Pitta when imbalanced produces yellow coloration of the feces, urine, eyes and skin, excess hunger and thirst, feeling of burning sensation and very little sleep.



WHAT IS KAPHA


Kapha is born out of water. In gross sense the structure of the body is due to kapha. It holds things together. It provides structure to everything from an individual cell or atom to musculoskeletal frame. It gives both physical and psychological strength, stability and endurance. It endows firmness of joints, adequate moisture and lubrication to joints, capacity to withhold or withstand emotions, strain etc. It governs immunity and resistance against disease and sexual potency. Kapha imparts mind body spirit stability and resistance. It governs the anabolism, formation of new cells and tissues, which are constantly destroyed and recreated.

Kapha when imbalanced produces debility of digestive activity, excess salivation, lassitude, and feeling of heaviness, dyspnoea, cough and excess sleep.



TIPS TO BALANCE VATA
 
* Massage with sesame oil 
* Consume warm cooked food and less of raw food
* Favor heavy food with sweet sour and salty taste
* Avoid light, cold, pungent, bitter and astringent food
* Avoid fasting
* Refrain from excessive aerobic activities.
 
TIPS TO BALANCE PITTA

*Avoid fatty, spicy and oily food.
* Restrict sour, pungent and salty food
* Ghee or clarified butter is the best to balance Pitta
* Practice pranayama, yoga and meditation

TIPS TO BALANCE KAPHA

*Exercise regularly
* Avoid heavy meals
* Favor pungent, bitter, astringent, light, dry and warm food
* Reduce heavy, oily, cold, sweet, sour and salty food
* Avoid excess sleep
* Avoid frozen desserts and milk products
* Try to be in warm and dry weather. 

KNOW YOUR CONSTITUTION

Human constitution is almost like a unique genetic code of an Individual. It is determined at the time of birth and it remains the same throughout the life span. It is generally of 7 types though there are hundreds of subtler variations.
